vintage memories

One of the really cool things about owning a 106 year old house is all of the stuff that you find in it, stuff left behind by previous owners, gems from their past. Over the years we have found all sorts of things in this house. When we bought it 7 years ago the previous owner pretty much packed a suitcase and walked out, leaving the house FULL to the brim with 60 years of life. When we started to sort through the mountains of belongings (and I do mean mountains the women could have been a featured guest on the show Hoarders) we found an old trunk full of cards, letters, pictures and momentous. It was full of the kinds of things we all save for our children. Things like First birthday cards, lockets of baby hair and pictures on Santa's lap. The remnants of a happy family and childhood memories. Several times we tried to return the trunk to the previous owner but she would only say she did not want any of it and to do whatever we wanted to with it.Neither Riz nore i felt right about discarding the trunk so for the last 6 years the truck has been tucked into a corner in our attack. We thought about trying to find the child that the cards and letters were addressed to but could never contact him. So for years it has just been up there holding the memories of a boys childhood. Fast forward to this past weekend and our spring cleaning project. We have been trying to purge the house of all the extra stuff that accumulates with a busy family. I was also pulling down some Easter decorations to decorate the house for the Easter season when I came across the trunk again. I sat down on the attic floor and began to look through it, it captured me again. It astonishes me that the previous owner did not want it or the contents back. It makes me wonder what could have happened to her relationship with her son that would cause her to not care about these memories. There were other strange things like this that we came across in the house her husband's World War II Diary, his writs watch, countless things that most of us would hold close and treasure. While I was going through the trunk I came across a stack of Vintage 1940 - 1950 greeting cards. Some of the cards were Easter cards others were birthday cards and still others were get well cards. They all had really cute vintage graphics of spring time on them. This gave me the idea to use them in my Easter decorations in the house. I gathered them all up and decided to string them together like a banner. I think they turned out pretty cute and in some way I feel like at least they are honoring the boy who they were intended for...

Sophia really enjoyed sorting these cards and helping me string them together. She loved how they felt and how they all sparkled with glitter. Some how these cards seem more substantial then the cards we buy today. They all have texture to them flocked or glitter adorning the images. They make me think I should always give really nice cards, you never know who will be looking at them 50, 60 or 70 years from now.

Birthday party #2

DEEP !! in birthday planning mode...Crafting and cooking for what we are referring to as

"SOPHIA"S BIG BUZZ BIRTHDAY BASH"

Sophia's 4th birthday is Thursday and I have some goodies in the works for her school class. We are making Whole orange muffins (this recipe is very poorly written but you get the idea, oh and I used half Orange Blossom honey and half brown sugar and they were as my friend Susan would say DELISH) for a snack and each child is going to get one of our beautiful little butterflies. The classroom is getting a whole flock along with a REAL butterfly growing kit. We are so excited about that really. Sophia has no idea I bought one for us at home as well :). Every child in the class does a "Life Board" for their birthday to share with the class. It is a celebration of however many years they have been alive. I had so much fun doing Sophia's board and frequently found myself in tears as I tried picking just the right pictures from each year of her life so far.
Her birthday party will be Sat. April 2nd. We have lots of fun things and goodies planned (can you say BOUNCE HOUSE?). Lets just pray for good weather because it will be mostly outside. I found that spring birthdays in Florida are hard because you are never sure what the weather is going to be like, hot, cold, dry, wet it is a real luck of the draw. We are also having a small family celebration on Sunday with all the grandparents.
Having 2 girls with birthdays 3 weeks apart is not easy. I am not sure what I am going to do every year but I am committed to them having their own special day regardless of what we decide to do on that day.
Oh Sophia's celebration is all about Toy Story this year (her choice) so hopefully I can "Girly" this up a bit... She LOVES this movie and can I say so do I. I am not sure why Disney only markets the Toy Story stuff to boys it definitely is a hot with my girls too. Sophia asks me all the time why there are no girl Buzz Lightyear PJ's...

I am making two of Sophia's gifts so I will be doing that this weekend while she is napping. I now she is going to love them. The first is a magazine rack for all of her High Five Magazines. Her grandparents got her a subscription and she loves getting it in the mail every month. I can remember being in the doctors office when I was a little girl and looking for all the High Life books.I loved them too, they are a classic. The second is a Peg Doll Dollhouse complete with Peg Dolls and furniture (well a table). I made Amelia a set of Peg Doll color matching dolls for her birthday and both girls have really enjoyed playing with those, so I know they will love the dollhouse. Liquid watercolors.
They are AWESOME, have you used them?
